Surprises Ahead With TED

Save PlanetGuess what?!

We’ll be attending the TEDx event in Abu Dhabi this Tuesday, May 21st! We’re very excited to be invited to be part of an international platform for education, diversity and inspiration. This TEDx is being hosted by WWF (World Wild Fund for Nature) with a focus on environmental issues such as, sustainable energy, climate change, and reconnecting with nature. We’ll be live tweeting from the event, so make sure to follow us on Twitter.

If you’d like to be part of the action, the lectures will be live streaming here. Stay tuned!

TED Talk

Haven’t heard of TED? Here’s a brief overview of its awesomeness:

Started as a 4-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives.

The annual TED Conference invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com.

TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani,Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and ex-UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The annual TED Conference takes place in Long Beach, California, with simulcast in Palm Springs; TEDGlobal is held each year in Oxford, UK.

TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily, and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide.

TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world, and the TEDFellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.

Gummy1

Gummy Bears are cute, but Gummy People are awesome! Fabcafe, a Japanese company, is offering the opportunity to create custom gummy molds of yourself.

Using a 3D body scanner and digital clay modeller, images of the person are captured and then rendered. Using a 3D printer the captured images are recreated using gelatin.

Gummy2

You are able to make faces and stand in any position (though the boring ol’ hands by your side seems to work best). However, the full body gummies are not life-size but they’re still very cool. A Secret Lullaby Factory

Lullaby Factory1

The Lullaby Factory is located in the back courtyard of Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in London. Architecture firm Studio Weave created the melodious construct out of pipes and drainage in an awkward space between the new building and the old. The beautiful lullabies ‘secretly’ echo throughout the hospital to calm and uplift the young patients. To listen to the tunes composed by Jessica Curry, patients and staff place an ear over a listening pipe or tune into a radio frequency inside.

Lullaby Factory3

“We have designed a fantasy landscape reaching 10 storeys in height and 32 metres in length, which can engage the imagination of everyone, from patients and parents to hospital staff, by providing an interesting and curious world to peer out onto.” -Architects Je Ahn and Maria Smith.
